Let’s face it…shark is frankly just one of the best summer birthday themes, especially for boys.  Adding a little bite to your pool party is a great way to have fun in the sun and still enjoy something your little ones will love. There are SOOOO many fun ideas for throwing a shark party too.  It’s really such a simple party theme.  I think about reusing it year after year.

How to use Shark Cookies

Shark cookies are incredibly versatile and can be used in a variety of creative ways throughout your party. One of the most popular uses is as a highlight on your dessert table. Their bold colors and expressive faces naturally draw the eye, making them perfect for creating visual interest among cupcakes, candies, and larger desserts. Arrange them in layers, scatter them among other treats, or place them on risers to give the display dimension.

Individually wrapped shark cookies also make fantastic party favors. Package them in clear bags, tie them with colorful ribbon, and add a themed tag. Guests love leaving with an adorable treat that matches the celebration.

You can also use shark cookies as part of an interactive activity. Kids can decorate their own versions with fondant pieces, candy eyes, sprinkles, or edible markers. This kind of hands-on experience adds excitement and gives children something creative to enjoy during the event.

Shark cookies can even be used to dress up place settings, welcome tables, or gift displays. Their playful, expressive style brings personality and charm to every corner of your party.

You don’t even have to plan a full shark themed party to utilize shark cookies.  They can be added into a normal pool party, a summer themed party, a beach themed party or even an under the sea party!

Displaying them on a simple teal or blue plate is a great way to simulate water too.  Winning.  You can also use blue jelly beans or sixlets on a white plate to add some color pop to your cookie plate!

Ideas for a Shark party

A shark party offers endless opportunities for creativity, fun, and bold visual moments. Start with a color palette inspired by the ocean — blues, aquas, greys, and whites — then layer in pops of red or teal to add energy. Consider whether you want your sharks to look cute and friendly or bold and dramatic. This decision helps guide your decorating style, dessert choices, and party activities.

Create an underwater atmosphere with layered streamers, wavy backdrops, balloon garlands, and cutout fins. Add bubbles, waves, and ocean textures to immerse your guests in the theme. For a fun entrance, place a “shark zone” sign or build a cardboard shark mouth walkway where kids can “enter the party” through the jaws.

Food is another place where your shark theme can shine. Blue drinks, bite-sized snacks, watermelon shark bowls, and themed labels add playful touches. Shark cookies and fin-topped cupcakes help bring your dessert table together beautifully.

Games and activities — like treasure dives, shark chases, or “pin the fin” — help fill the party with laughter and movement. With thoughtful details and themed touches, your shark party becomes an unforgettable underwater adventure.

Fondant Shark Mouth Cookies Tutorial: STEP by STEP

Ok, now that we have explored all the ways to USE these fun cookies…ready to learn how to make them?

Materials:

Step 1:

For the sugar cookie base, you can use any recipe.  I highly recommend my basic cut out sugar recipe. It is great for keeping it’s shape and tastes delicious.  Once you settle on a recipe, you can start by prepping the dough.

You will want to use a liberal amount of flour on the surface you are cutting and even a little extra in the dough itself.

Roll out dough until it about ¼ inch thick. Using the candy corn shaped cookie cutter, cut the cookies and place on parchment covered cookie sheets.  Bake according to the recipe.

Allow cookies to completely cool prior to decorating.  I like to bake the cookies the day before so they are nice a cool for decorating.

Step 2:

Once your cookies are baked, you will want to prep your fondant. If you are using white fondant, you will want to color the fondant with the gel food coloring.

To color fondant, start with white and add drops of gel food coloring, mixing as you go until fondant is the desired color. Keep mixing until it no longer has a “tie-dyed” look to it.  You will need mostly light blue and white fondant with a small amounts of red and black fondant.

If you are using pre-colored fondant, you don’t need to mix any food coloring.  Either method works. The only difference is the white fondant option is a little more time consuming, but also more budget friendly.

Step 3:

Start with the white fondant.  Roll it out to 1/8 inch thick.  Using the same candy corn shaped cookie cutter you used for the cookies, cut out one white shark head per cookie.  Set aside to start drying out an hardening.

Also from the rolled out white fondant, cut 5-8 small white hearts per cookie for teeth.  The number of hearts you will need per cookie varies on the size of the cookie and the hearts you use.

For larger cookies, you will want more teeth or larger hearts.  For smaller cookies, you will want fewer, smaller hearts.

Next, roll out the light blue fondant.  Using the candy corn cutter, cut one shark head per cookie.  Once you have cut the head, move the cutter down 1/3 of the way and cut the bottom off.

This will make a curvy v shape.  Let it set to begin hardening.

Once the light blue “v” has hardened for 10-15 mins, gently place it on top of the white shark head to continue drying so they harden together.

Step 4:

Now that the shark head is made, we will move onto the mouth and eyes.  Roll out the black fondant. For the mouth, you will use a combination of a circle and a square (or knife).

Cut the circle shape that fits inside the light blue “v”.  Then trim off the bottom edge so it makes a shape like a sideways “D”.

Place the white hearts tip inward on top of the black mouth.  Using the same circle cutter, trim the overhanging tops of the hearts off so that it is a black mouth with pointy white teeth.  Set aside to dry.

Also from the black fondant,  cut a small circle for each cookie.  Cut the circle in half to make two side eyes.  Set aside to dry.

Place the mouth on the white head.  Roll out the red fondant.  Use the circle cutter you used with the black and cut a circle.  Once the circle is cut, slightly smash the fondant so it is just a bit bigger.

Cut another circle the same size inside.  This will give you a thin red ring.  cut the ring so that it is a long line, like a snake.

Gently wrap the black mouth with the red line.  If you have extra where the two ends meet, cut the excess.  Pinch the red ends together around the mouth.

Step 5:

Place the eyes onto the sides of the shark head.  Any fondant that is too dry to stick on it’s own can be attached with a small drop of water. Using the edible marker, make two small nostril dots on the nose.

Once the Fondant is hardened, it can be placed on the cookies.  Use a small amount of icing or a thin layer of frosting to attach the fondant to the cookies.

Easy peasy and ready to party!

Coordinating Shark Party Supplies

The easiest way serve all the glorious party treats you make and buy is with some themed party ware. This is budget friendly and keeps the design flowing through every part of your party. Definitely a must buy!!!

Shark cookies and other themed treats shine even brighter when paired with party ware that supports your color palette and theme. Coordinated plates, napkins, cups, and trays instantly create a cohesive look, transforming your dessert table into a polished, photo-ready display. When the colors of your party ware echo the ocean blues, greys, and whites of your shark theme, your treats feel more intentional and beautifully styled.

Themed party ware also makes hosting easier. Whether you’re creating detailed fondant shark mouth cookies, simple shark fins, or an entire ocean-themed cookie set, these treats transform your dessert table into a lively underwater display that guests will remember long after the last bite.

One of the most impressive aspects of shark cookies is how adaptable they are. They can be cute and friendly for younger kids, bold and fierce for older children, or somewhere in between. Their vivid colors, expressive details, and playful shapes naturally enhance your party theme, making your décor and food feel cohesive and exciting. Shark cookies fit beautifully with ocean-themed decorations, bold balloon garlands, and wave-inspired colors. They even look adorable next to simple snacks when served on coordinated party ware.

Beyond their visual appeal, shark cookies contribute to the overall party experience. They spark conversation, become photo-worthy moments, and act as themed anchors that connect your decorations, food, and activities. Kids love examining the details, choosing their favorite designs, or even decorating their own versions. These moments of wonder and interaction make your celebration more memorable.

A shark-themed party becomes even more immersive when paired with the right activities. Whether kids are playing games that mimic underwater adventures, crafting fins or ocean creatures, or simply running through a “shark zone,” your party naturally builds energy and excitement. Shark cookies extend that playfulness into the dessert portion of your celebration, tying the entire theme together.

Themed party ware plays a quiet but important role in supporting your shark treats. Coordinated plates and napkins enhance the color story and keep the party feeling polished. Because party ware is budget friendly and easy to use, it helps your event look purposeful with minimal effort. When everything from your desserts to your tableware reflects the same ocean-inspired palette, your party becomes a fully realized experience rather than just a collection of themed items.

In the end, shark cookies are more than just desserts — they are a creative element that helps bring your underwater vision to life. They highlight your theme, radiate personality, and make your celebration feel thoughtful and joyful.
