Ideas for using cookies at a Mermaid party
Cookies are one of the most charming elements you can add to a mermaid party because they combine creativity and deliciousness in one sweet bite. Mermaid-themed cookies — shaped like tails, shells, starfish, or even sea creatures — instantly elevate your dessert collection and tie your under-the-sea story together beautifully.
One easy idea for using cookies is to make them a focal point on your dessert table. Arrange them in clusters with complementary treats like cupcakes, ice cream, or candy “pearls.” You can display them on plates filled with sugar or crushed graham crackers to mimic sand, giving your table a beachy, coastal feel. You can also use cookies as edible décor — place one at each place setting or wrap them in clear treat bags with ribbon to give as favors.
Another fun way to use cookies is as part of an interactive station. Set up a cookie display where guests can choose their favorite shapes and decorate their own with colorful icing, edible glitter, and candy accents. This adds a creative activity to your party and makes dessert part of the fun, not just something to eat!
I love using gorgeous cookies like these in my party set-ups. For my daughter’s mermaid party, the little mermaid cookies as one of the focal points of the party. They were so cute and made such a nice treat.
To display the cookies, I filled the plates and serving trays with brown sugar to resemble sand. This gave the whole table a beach-y feel and the sugar smelled so nice!!
Mermaid Cookies Tutorial: STEP by STEP
Now for the good stuff…how to actually make the mermaid cookies. Here are the step by step directions to making your own fabulous mermaid cookies!
Materials:
- Fondant (I recommend starting with white and coloring to desired color)
- Royal Icing or Icing Pouches
- Gel Food Coloring
- Mermaid Cookie cutter (I used this one!)
- Sugar Cookie Recipe
- Circle shaped fondant cutter
- Parchment Paper
Step 1:
Prepare sugar cookie dough. I use my basic cut out sugar recipe. You can use whatever recipe you desire, as long as they don’t spread too much when baking.
If you experience spreading, this article is helpful for figuring out why!
Step 2:
Flour the surface and your rolling pin…like A LOT. Roll out dough until it about ¼ inch thick. Using the mermaid cookie cutter, cut the cookies to the desired shape and place on parchment covered cookie sheets.
Step 3:
Bake per recipe and allow to fully cool.
Step 4:
Now it’s time to decorate. Prep your fondant. Choose three colors (I used teal, light teal and pink). Color the fondant to the colors you would like to use.
Roll the fondant out until it is ¼ inch thick. Use the circle fondant punch to punch out several small circles. You’ll need 13 circles per mermaid cookie.
Step 5:
If you are comfortable using royal icing, prep your icing, outline and fill the mermaid cookies with the base color. I used a light teal.
If you are NOT comfortable with royal icing, you can use the icing pouches to cover the cookies. This takes a little longer to harden, but will still look cute with the cookie design!
Step 6:
Lay out the fondant circles on the icing while it is still wet in rows of three. Layer the circles slightly as you go so they look like scales. Allow the icing and fondant to dry.
Your cookies are ready!!! Easy peasy and oh so cute!!!

Coordinating Mermaid Party Supplies
The easiest way to serve all the glorious party treats you make and buy is with some themed party ware. This is budget friendly and keeps the design flowing through every part of your party. Definitely a must buy!!!
For a mermaid party — where whimsical desserts and colorful treats are the stars — themed party ware ties everything together effortlessly. Coordinated plates, cups, napkins, and serving trays in ocean hues enhance your dessert table and help your treats feel intentional rather than scattered. A tray of cookies looks sweeter on a shell-shaped plate, and cupcakes feel extra festive when served in mermaid scale wrappers. Themed tableware creates harmony across all areas — from the snack station to the dessert tier — helping guests instantly recognize your mermaid motif.
Themed pieces also save stress. Coordinated colors and patterns mean less fretting over mismatched dishes and more time focusing on the fun. Cleanup becomes easier with disposable options that match your palette, and your party photos look cohesive and styled without a ton of effort.
Whether you go simple with ocean tones or go all out with iridescence and sparkle, investing in themed party ware is a small step that makes a big visual impact. It ensures your under-the-sea celebration feels connected, beautiful, and ready for celebration from the first treat served to the last cookie enjoyed.
Choosing the right party supplies and tableware can also make a simple party into an extraordinary party!

Conclusion for Mermaid Party Ideas
Mermaid parties have a special kind of charm — the kind that sparkles in every detail and creates an atmosphere kids immediately fall in love with. Whether you’re planning a grand under-the-sea celebration or keeping things sweet and simple with a few themed treats, the magic is in the storytelling. From shimmering colors and ocean-inspired textures to playful desserts and interactive activities, every element works together to create an experience that feels dreamy, joyful, and full of imagination.
Simple mermaid cookies are a perfect example of how a small detail can make a big impact. These adorable little treats carry your theme effortlessly, adding color, shape, and fun to your dessert table. Paired with themed cupcakes, colorful candies, or sparkling drinks, your cookies help build a cohesive table that draws guests in and makes them excited to explore. Even when you’re short on time, cookies allow you to instantly elevate the look and feel of your celebration.
Decorations are another piece of the puzzle that make your mermaid world come alive. A soft palette of aquas, teals, lavender, seafoam green, and sand-inspired neutrals creates a calming, oceanic backdrop. Add pops of iridescent shimmer or glittery accents and your space begins to sparkle like light bouncing off waves. Simple additions like shells, pearls, streamers, or banners can transform a blank room into a whimsical underwater oasis.
Dress-up and activities help deepen the experience even further. Giving kids the chance to become mermaids, sea princes, sparkling fairies, or underwater explorers opens the door to pretend play that lasts the entire party. Moments like decorating seashells, creating treasure maps, or searching for hidden ocean treasures encourage creativity and give guests memories they’ll talk about long after the party ends.
Food brings its own fun. Mermaid treats don’t have to be complicated — often the simplest ideas are the most adored. A platter of themed cookies, bowls of “mermaid bubbles” (fruit or candy), and pastel-colored drinks delight kids instantly. Add whimsical food labels or serve items on ocean-themed platters, and you’ve created a dessert table that’s both magical and manageable. Treats don’t have to be fancy to be enchanting.
Party ware ties everything together. Themed plates, napkins, cups, and serving pieces help unify your party’s color palette and add polish to every moment. When your table is coordinated and cohesive, the theme feels intentional, seamless, and elevated — even if your decorations and desserts were simple to assemble.
The beauty of a mermaid party is how flexible it can be. Whether you want a sparkling, over-the-top fantasy world or a gentle, pastel-themed gathering, you can tailor your ideas to fit your space, budget, and style. What truly matters is the joy it brings — the smiles, laughter, creativity, and sense of wonder your child and guests will experience.
At the end of the day, mermaid parties are about celebrating the magic of childhood. They invite imagination, encourage play, and create a world where anything feels possible — even if just for an afternoon. With a few thoughtful touches, some shimmer and sparkle, and delicious mermaid cookies to tie it all together, your party becomes an unforgettable under-the-sea adventure.
