Poke Ball Cupcakes Tutorial: STEP by STEP
Alright…let’s make some adorable Poke Ball Cupcakes!! Promise these are going to be easy!
Materials:
- Cupcakes: any color or flavor I made my super simple never fail Chocolate cupcakes recipe!
- White frosting (any flavor)
- Circle Fondant Punch
- Knife
- White Fondant
- Red Fondant
- Black Fondant
Note: with the colors black and red, I DO recommend buying the colored fondant and not trying to dye white fondant. Red and Black and the HARDEST colors to dye and get right and it can be frustrating to keep adding dye. If you do want to dye, however, I recommend this food coloring for black and red.
Step 1:
Bake cupcakes using recipe of choice and allow to fully cool. If you are in a hurry (or frankly not a baker)…you can also buy cupcakes and scrape off the frosting to decorate.
Step 2:
Prep the fondant. Start with black. Roll the fondant out to 1/4 inch thick. For each cupcake you will need a thin strip of black (about 1/2-3/4 inch thick and 4 inches long). You will also need two circles. One 3/4 inch black and one 1/2 inch white. Cut a strip of the black for each cupcake. Punch a 3/4 inch circle for each cupcake. Set aside to start drying.
Step 3:
Next, use the white fondant. Roll out the white fondant to 1/4 inch thick. Punch a 1/2 inch circle for each cupcake. Set aside to start hardening.
Now roll out the white fondant. You are going to need to roll and cut and kneed and roll and cut between each cupcake.
For each cupcake, you need a 6-7 inch half circle of fondant. The easiest way to do this is to go two cupcakes at a time.
Roll out the fondant. cut a 6-7 inch circle with a knife (it doesn’t need to be precise, just flat and large enough. Cut the circle straight down the middle making two half circles.
Step 4:
Using a butter knife or icing spatula, place a thin layer of frosting on the top of each cupcake. Take one of the white half circles and gently lay it across the bottom half of the cupcake.
Once it is flat across the top, gently press the fondant into the bottom sides of the cupcake. Trim extra fondant (which can be re-rolled to cover additional cupcakes.)
Repeat with second cupcake. Then add extra trimmed fondant back into your white to continue the process for additional cupcakes.
Step 5:
Now roll out the red fondant. Repeat the same instructions from steps 3 and 4, but with red and add to the top of the cupcake. It’s ok if the middle line isn’t perfect. It will get covered up with the black.
Step 6:
Now that you have the cupcakes covered in half white and half red, it’s time to add the black strip and the circles. If the fondant is still a little tacky on the bottom, they will adhere on their own. If not, you can use small drops of water as glue.
Place the black strip across the middle line. Trim sides as necessary. Place the black circle in the middle of the cupcake. Place a white circle in the middle of the black circle.
Done and ready to eat!
