If you are looking for a stress-free cupcake recipe, these cupcakes are for you!

This chocolate cupcakes recipe is moist and delicious.  When I first started baking for parties, I was on a quest for the perfect chocolate cupcakes.  I looked through cookbook after cookbook and tried recipe after recipe.

In a two week stretch I think I made 1000 cupcakes.  No exaggeration.  The result of all that trial and error, figuring out what combination of cupcake ingredients worked best together to create the perfect (and EASY) chocolate cupcakes.

I didn’t want difficult cupcakes, especially when making cupcakes for large parties.  I needed cupcakes that I could make easily and be guaranteed to turn out right time after time.

Fortunately, I found the combination that I was looking for and now I’m gonna share it with you!

How to use chocolate cupcakes

Chocolate cupcakes are one of the most flexible desserts you can serve at a party. Their individual size makes them perfect for a wide range of settings, from large celebrations to small gatherings. One of the most common ways to use chocolate cupcakes is as the main dessert, arranged neatly on a dessert table where guests can easily help themselves.

They also work well as part of a larger dessert spread. Chocolate cupcakes pair beautifully with other treats, adding richness and familiarity to the table. Because they’re easy to transport and display, they can be placed on stands, trays, or tiered displays to create visual interest.

Chocolate cupcakes can also be used creatively throughout the party. They make great party favors when packaged individually or can be placed at each guest’s seat as a sweet surprise. For kids’ parties, cupcakes are especially practical because there’s no cutting or serving required.

No matter how they’re used, the key is presentation. When chocolate cupcakes are given space to stand out and are styled thoughtfully, they become more than just a dessert. They become part of the party décor, reinforcing the theme and adding warmth and charm to the celebration.

Chocolate Cupcakes are super versatile.  They can be decorated to match any party.  I have used these chocolate cupcakes for llama cupcakes, cat cupcakes, Minnie Mouse cupcakes and more!

Ideas for a decorating chocolate cupcakes

Decorating chocolate cupcakes is where creativity really comes into play. Even the simplest cupcake can feel special with a little attention to detail. From smooth swirls of frosting to playful toppings, decorating allows you to tailor cupcakes to your theme, color palette, or occasion.

One popular approach is keeping decorations simple and classic. Clean frosting designs create a polished look that works for almost any celebration. Another option is adding texture through piping techniques or layered decorations that give the cupcakes more dimension.

Color choice plays a big role in cupcake decorating. Coordinated colors help cupcakes feel intentional and connected to the rest of the party. Even using just one or two colors can make a strong visual impact when done consistently.

Decorating can also be an activity. For parties with kids, setting up a cupcake decorating station allows guests to personalize their own treats. This adds an interactive element to the celebration and gives kids something fun to do.

The goal of decorating chocolate cupcakes isn’t perfection. It’s about creativity and fun. Whether simple or detailed, decorated cupcakes add personality and joy to the dessert table.

When you are baking cupcakes at home, I definitely recommend cooling them completely before decorating.  I actually place my cupcakes in the refrigerator prior to decorating to ensure they are nice and cool.

Properly cooling your frosting for chocolate cupcakes can help to make sure that your icing holds the shape you are going for with decorating as well.

Once cupcakes are cooled, you can use any color frosting along with fondant and other candies to make these cupcakes into your desired character or theme.

Recipe for Chocolate Cupcakes: STEP by STEP

Alright…let’s take a look at the recipe for these simple and perfect chocolate cupcakes!  Don’t be scared away by these ingredients.  Trust me…it’s delicious!

Ingredients:

  • 1 Box Chocolate cake mix (I recommend using one WITHOUT  pudding in the mix. This is my favorite!)
  • 2 oz. unsweetened baker’s chocolate
  • 2 oz. semi-sweet baker’s chocolate
  • 3 eggs
  • 2/3 cup water
  • 2/3 cup sprite
  • 1 cup miracle whip

Materials:

These are my recommended materials to make baking easy and ensure everything turns out just right.  You can completely make them with a hand mixer or the old fashioned way with your wisk…but it will be much faster and easier with a stand mixer!

How to make chocolate cupcakes

Step 1:

Preheat oven to 350°.

Step 2:

Place miracle whip and eggs into mixer and mix on low speed.  Melt chocolate in microwave (30 second intervals stirring between until melted to prevent burning of chocolate.)

Add the melted chocolate to the mixer and continue mixing until smooth.

Step 3:

With mixer still on low, add cake mix, sprite and water.  The best method I have found for doing this to alternate the mix and liquids as you add to keep the mis even and smooth.

I start with adding a little cake mix, and using a 1/3 cup measuring cup, a little water until that cup is empty and then switch to sprite.  I then repeat until all ingredients have been added.

Step 4:

Once all ingredients are added, I increase speed for a couple minutes and ensure it is fully mixed. I then transfer the cake batter to either cupcake tins for a cake pan (depending on whether I am baking cupcakes on a cake).

For cupcakes, I place cupcake liners in the tins and fill 2/3 full with batter.  I usually can get 1.5 large to  2 dozen small cupcakes from one batch.

For cake, I butter the cake pan bottom and sides and fill to 1/2-2/3 full.  I usually can get 2 10 inch round cakes from 1 batch.

Step 5:

Bake cupcakes for 14-16 mins (2 dozen)

Bake cake for 27-30 mins (1 layer at a time).

Cake is down when it is dry in the middle.

Pro Tip:

You can also freeze these cupcakes for later use.  They retain their flavor and texture after defrosting!  This is great if you are in a time crunch or don’t need a full batch all at once.

When I use this recipe for a cake, I ALWAYS freeze the layers before I frost and decorate!
