Throwing a CACTUS PARTY?
☑️ This Cactus Party Kit is the perfect set to get your party planning headed in the right direction!

Cactus Cookies

The best part of these delicious cookies is the fun and simple watercolor design.  The first set of cookies showcase different shaped cacti on a bright white fondant background.

The second cactus cookie design is actually made up of several cookies each “painted” as a part of a cactus.  Lain together they create the prickly pear style cactus plants.  Aren’t they fun??

Ways to use cactus cookies in a party

There are so many different options for using fun cactus cookies.  The cookies can be displayed on wooden plates or white plates to help them stand out on a dessert or party food table.  You can also place cookies directly on place settings so guests already have their own cookies ready to enjoy.

Another fun option is to place cookies into cellophane bags and give them out as party favors.  I personally love giving food as favors.  It definitely beats trickets and allows your guests to go home with a little something sweet!

How to make Cactus Cookies

Alright…now for the recipe and instructions for decorating both styles of cactus cookies…

Both cookies start with the same base.  Using round cookies cutters, both designs were baked and cut into circles.  The cookies were baked using my Simple Sugar Cookie Recipe.  It is delicious and super easy!

Painted Cactus Cookies

Materials:

Step 1:

Bake cookies using recipe and medium to large circle cookie cutter.  Allow cookies to completely cool prior to decorating.

Step 2:

While cookies are cooling, roll out white fondant until it is 1/4 inch thick and cut with the same size cookie cutter.  Allow fondant to harden completely.  Put a thin layer of white frosting on the cookies and place white fondant circle on top of cookie.

Step 3:

Squirt small amounts of green, yellow, and pink food coloring into paint dish sections.  Using the paint brush, get the brush wet and dip it into the food coloring.  Paint the cactus designs onto the fondant just like using watercolor paint.

I recommend starting with the lighter colors and adding darker food coloring to shadow.  You can speckle the cactus with dark green or black food coloring.  Add pink flowers as desired.  Allow to dry completely before serving.

Cactus Cookies in Pieces

Materials:

Step 1:

Bake cookies using recipe and various sized circle cookie cutters.  Allow cookies to completely cool prior to decorating.  Mix white fondant with green (or green/yellow) food coloring for cookies and pink food coloring for flowers.

Step 2:

While cookies are cooling, roll out green fondant until it is 1/4 inch thick and cut with the same size cookie cutter as corresponding cookies.  Allow fondant to harden completely.  Put a thin layer of white frosting on the cookies and place white fondant circle on top of cookie.

Also roll out and cut pink fondant with flower cookie cutter. As the fondant starts to dry, bend the fondant around the top of a pencil to make the flower stand out.

Finally place a white sugar pearl in the center.  Once hardened, place the flower on the cupcake.  Easy peasy and ready to enjoy!!

Step 3:

Squirt small amounts of green, yellow, and pink food coloring into paint dish sections.  Using the paint brush, get the brush wet and dip it into the food coloring.  Paint the curved lines onto the fondant just like using watercolor paint.

I recommend starting with the lighter colors and adding darker food coloring to shadow.  Prior to drying, add white sugar pearl along lines to make the “spikes” on the cactus.  Add fondant flowers with a dot of white frosting.  Allow to dry completely before serving.
