You don’t need to be a crazy good cookie decorator to make these adorable treats.  I love baking with my kids, especially when I can step back and let them create.

Ideas for using cookies at a Mermaid party

I love using gorgeous cookies like these in my party set-ups.  For my daughter’s mermaid party, the little mermaid cookies as one of the focal points of the party.  They were so cute and made such a nice treat.

To display the cookies, I filled the plates and serving trays with brown sugar to resemble sand.  This gave the whole table a beach-y feel and the sugar smelled so nice!!

Mermaid Cookies Tutorial: STEP by STEP

Now for the good stuff…how to actually make the mermaid cookies. Here are the step by step directions to making your own fabulous mermaid cookies!

Materials:

Step 1:

Prepare sugar cookie dough.  I use my basic cut out sugar recipe.  You can use whatever recipe you desire, as long as they don’t spread too much when baking.

If you experience spreading, this article is helpful for figuring out why!

Step 2:

Flour the surface and your rolling pin…like A LOT.  Roll out dough until it about ¼ inch thick. Using the mermaid cookie cutter, cut the cookies to the desired shape and place on parchment covered cookie sheets.

Step 3:

Bake per recipe and allow to fully cool.

Step 4:

Now it’s time to decorate.  Prep your fondant. Choose three colors (I used teal, light teal and pink).  Color the fondant to the colors you would like to use.

Roll the fondant out until it is ¼ inch thick.  Use the circle fondant punch to punch out several small circles.  You’ll need 13 circles per mermaid cookie.

Step 5:

If you are comfortable using royal icing, prep your icing, outline and fill the mermaid cookies with the base color.  I used a light teal.

If you are NOT comfortable with royal icing, you can use the icing pouches to cover the cookies.  This takes a little longer to harden, but will still look cute with the cookie design!

Step 6:

Lay out the fondant circles on the icing while it is still wet in rows of three. Layer the circles slightly as you go so they look like scales.  Allow the icing and fondant to dry.

Your cookies are ready!!!  Easy peasy and oh so cute!!!
