Fondant Shark Mouth Cookies Tutorial: STEP by STEP

Ok, now that we have explored all the ways to USE these fun cookies…ready to learn how to make them?

Materials:

Step 1:

For the sugar cookie base, you can use any recipe.  I highly recommend my basic cut out sugar recipe. It is great for keeping it’s shape and tastes delicious.  Once you settle on a recipe, you can start by prepping the dough.

You will want to use a liberal amount of flour on the surface you are cutting and even a little extra in the dough itself.

Roll out dough until it about ¼ inch thick. Using the candy corn shaped cookie cutter, cut the cookies and place on parchment covered cookie sheets.  Bake according to the recipe.

Allow cookies to completely cool prior to decorating.  I like to bake the cookies the day before so they are nice a cool for decorating.

Step 2:

Once your cookies are baked, you will want to prep your fondant. If you are using white fondant, you will want to color the fondant with the gel food coloring.

To color fondant, start with white and add drops of gel food coloring, mixing as you go until fondant is the desired color. Keep mixing until it no longer has a “tie-dyed” look to it.  You will need mostly light blue and white fondant with a small amounts of red and black fondant.

If you are using pre-colored fondant, you don’t need to mix any food coloring.  Either method works. The only difference is the white fondant option is a little more time consuming, but also more budget friendly.

Step 3:

Start with the white fondant.  Roll it out to 1/8 inch thick.  Using the same candy corn shaped cookie cutter you used for the cookies, cut out one white shark head per cookie.  Set aside to start drying out an hardening.

Also from the rolled out white fondant, cut 5-8 small white hearts per cookie for teeth.  The number of hearts you will need per cookie varies on the size of the cookie and the hearts you use.

For larger cookies, you will want more teeth or larger hearts.  For smaller cookies, you will want fewer, smaller hearts.

Next, roll out the light blue fondant.  Using the candy corn cutter, cut one shark head per cookie.  Once you have cut the head, move the cutter down 1/3 of the way and cut the bottom off.

This will make a curvy v shape.  Let it set to begin hardening.

Once the light blue “v” has hardened for 10-15 mins, gently place it on top of the white shark head to continue drying so they harden together.

Step 4:

Now that the shark head is made, we will move onto the mouth and eyes.  Roll out the black fondant. For the mouth, you will use a combination of a circle and a square (or knife).

Cut the circle shape that fits inside the light blue “v”.  Then trim off the bottom edge so it makes a shape like a sideways “D”.

Place the white hearts tip inward on top of the black mouth.  Using the same circle cutter, trim the overhanging tops of the hearts off so that it is a black mouth with pointy white teeth.  Set aside to dry.

Also from the black fondant,  cut a small circle for each cookie.  Cut the circle in half to make two side eyes.  Set aside to dry.

Place the mouth on the white head.  Roll out the red fondant.  Use the circle cutter you used with the black and cut a circle.  Once the circle is cut, slightly smash the fondant so it is just a bit bigger.

Cut another circle the same size inside.  This will give you a thin red ring.  cut the ring so that it is a long line, like a snake.

Gently wrap the black mouth with the red line.  If you have extra where the two ends meet, cut the excess.  Pinch the red ends together around the mouth.

Step 5:

Place the eyes onto the sides of the shark head.  Any fondant that is too dry to stick on it’s own can be attached with a small drop of water. Using the edible marker, make two small nostril dots on the nose.

Once the Fondant is hardened, it can be placed on the cookies.  Use a small amount of icing or a thin layer of frosting to attach the fondant to the cookies.

Easy peasy and ready to party!
