Aren’t bright colored fish cookies just so much fun to look at.  When I settled on a fishing themed party for my little man, I KNEW I wanted to make some cute bright colored fish to put on the party table.

It was so much fun to make these DIY fish cookies.  My two daughters also wanted to help with the cookies.  When a recipe is this simple, it’s such a blast to let the little ones help out.

I was super obsessed with how cute the little eyes looked on the fish too.

I think my favorite part of making my own desserts for a party is that you can make them match your colors perfectly.  There is no, “Oh gee, I hope the cookies are the right color!”

If you mix your fondant and it isn’t the right shade, add some more food coloring until you get your perfect color!  Winning!

Here is the super simple DIY Fish Cookies Tutorial:

Materials:

Step 1:

Using your favorite sugar cookie recipe, or a box mix, prep the cookie dough.  Roll dough out using a rolling pin adding flour to prevent sticking.

When the dough is about 1/4 inch thick (thick enough to hold shape, but not too thick to spread out too much), use the cookie cutter to cut out fish.

Step 2:

Place cookies on parchment paper on a cookie sheet and bake according to recipe instructions.  When the cookies are done baking, move parchment paper and cookies to a counter or rack to cool.

Step 3:

Mix fondant with food coloring gel to reach the desired color.  I prefer the gel food coloring over liquid because it is easier to control the color and less likely to make a mess.

Also, this set comes in gorgeous colors!!!  I like to put the white fondant in ziplock bags with a few drops of food coloring and let my kids mix the bag.

This keeps the dye contained and lets them participate in the process without making a mess.

Step 4:

Once the fondant is the desired color, roll out flat: about 1/4 inch thick.  Using the fish cookie cutter, cut out the fish shape.

Allow the fondant to sit for 15-20 mins so it becomes stiff enough to hold shape.  Press the candy eye into the fish head.

The fondant can be placed on top of the cookies.  You can either use a couple small drops of water on the back side of the fondant to stick it to the cookies or use a very thin layer of frosting as “glue”.
